Uhm, okay... Ideas?
Setup: Player/Computer connected by ethernet. Connected to player to remove and reup some songs. Everything worked, but connection between player and comp was lost. After that, player couldn't boot. Turns out that I was getting ext2 errors all over the place, and had an extremely hard time dropping to a shell. Once I did, I fsck'd the drive, and all was better. Or so I thought.

When the player starts, I get a message:
Starting player
player.cpp : 385:empeg-car 2.00-beta11 2002/02/08.
! tags.cpp : 61:Failed to open tags (0xc0041002).

So, I decided I'd delete all my music and re-upload EVERYTHING. (Long proces, but I'm not going anywhere the rest of the night.) So, I delete everything in emplode, and sync up.
Emplode starts working, but then gives warnings:
"Rumble" could not be syncronized. Read on socket failed. (0x8004003d)
"The Extreme" could not be syncronized. An established connection was aborted by the software in your host machine. (0x80072745)

So, I started taking my wnetwork apart again. An hour later, when I couldn't find anything, I left my COM connection up while syncing, and found the problem:
serial_notify_thread.cpp: 117:@@ F0x3c00
serial_notify_thread.cpp: 118:@@ TMusic Box Dancer
serial_notify_thread.cpp: 119:@@ AFrank Mills
serial_notify_thread.cpp: 120:@@ GNew Age
serial_notify_thread.cpp: 116:@@ N9
serial_notify_thread.cpp: 117:@@ F0x3c00
Restored terminal settings
Remounting first music partition read-only
Remounting second music partition read-only
No secondary hard disk
Player exited normally: 1
Switching to shell-player loop
Starting bash.
empeg:/empeg/bin#

It seems that everytime I sync now, the player 'exits normally' to a prompt!
So, essentially, I'm screwed - I figure I need to really make everything clean, but am not sure how to do that on the player side.

Suggestions, comments?

Thanks!
Mike,

Something wrong with the song file "Music Box Dancer" perhaps?

Dunno.. Doubt it, though, because it will loop, displaying those 6 lines over and over (each time Empeg said it deleted a file) and then it will bomb out. THe first feww syncs I did, it actually seemed to be deleting files, but now, it bombs out immediately.
I already did a 'clean' upgrade (reinstalled 2.00b11, no hijack anymore) when I was having the e2fs errors hoping that would fix it..

Thanks for your quick reply. :> I'm sittin' here, trying some stuff..
Mike.

Interesting, that may actually have been it.. I jumped forward a track, so it showed:
serial_notify_thread.cpp: 116:@@ N3
serial_notify_thread.cpp: 117:@@ F0x4c80
serial_notify_thread.cpp: 118:@@ TBlue Monday
serial_notify_thread.cpp: 119:@@ AOrgy
serial_notify_thread.cpp: 120:@@ GRock
serial_notify_thread.cpp: 180:@@ #4c80 0:00:00

And then reloaded emplode, deleted everything, and sync'd. No errors this time. So, now I think I'm good for go..

I find it strange that something could have done that, tho.. I mean, if I didn't have the developer image loaded, I wouldn't have know WHAT to do.. ESPICALLY with the e2fs errors - the system wasn't forcing a fsck, and it was stuck in a loop, with errors along the lines of 'block nnnnnnn past logical end of unit" errors, would caused the player to terminate and reload, starting the whole process over. If I DIDN'T have a developer image, I would have been SOL in calling support..

Thanks..
Mike.

There's definitely something wrong with the player databases, these errors shouldn't be happening.

Didn't you have disk drive trouble earlier? If so, and if you've gotten your disk drive problems solved now (for sure), and you've already deleted all the tunes from the player, it might not hurt to run the builder image (on each drive separately, followed by a software install on each drive separately) just to make sure the partitions are clean and tested.

I will do that, if I have issues after this, or next time I decide to delete everything. (I started syncin everything, and it seems to be running fine - faster than I thought it would.)

I did notice something, and I was going to post about it, thinking I found another bug in HiJack, but, I forgot - I'm not RUNNING HiJack. Anyways, my "Synchronising" logo has stopped - it's "frozen", but the sync is still working. (I only bring this up because burn-in came to mind..)

Thanks for yer help, I'll run the builder image next time I delete everything, to make sure my drive's 100% clean.

Gratzi!
Mike.

The last line has appeard long after the sync started.. (25% done with 1300 files.)
What the heck is that?? You ain't seen me roight? Did the programmers put little easter eggs in the software? Or is it really complaining? :> I dont have a song named that, so..

Heh..

Happened again, while sync'ing. Get these errors from ext2fs:
EXT2-fs warning (device ide0(3,4)): ext2_free_blocks: bit already cleared for bl
ock 1007977

..scrolling all over the page, some with the same block, some with different blocks.
Off to get the drive builder..

Anyways, my "Synchronising" logo has stopped - it's "frozen", but the sync is still working.

This is a known bug in 2.0 beta 11.

I do not know if the other error messages you noticed during the synch were normal or not.

Yeah, I'm screwed.

After using the drive utility to remake the filesystem (and run a cool burn-in utility..)
I reloaded the 2.00b11 image on, and went to sync. There were no errors, but about 75% of the way thru sync'in (of a total 1230 files, about 6Gb) the empeg rebooted itself. Of course, I did NOT have a windo opem so I missed any error messages, but now, it's stuck rebooting itself:

Off-Topic. Sorry;
Is anyone else having problems reading this thread? I have to scroll an entire page to the right to read all of a post. Like word-wrapping is somehow turned off for just this thread.
No other threads or groups have ever done this to me

When you put 2.00b11 on it, did you also put Hijack on it to fix the Jiffies bug before doing the synch? Maybe that's all it was.

It's because of those incredibly long "words" that is breaking the wordwrapping.

The message is from the Linux kernel to alert you to the fact that something seriously bizarre has happened. That's not the original message however, somebody at Empeg must have changed it

You should only in theory get the error message if the kernel detects an incorrect triggering of an exception handler (data abort specifically). The Linux ARM people think that it is caused by a silicon level bug in the StrongARM processor so it is VERY odd that only you have had this error! Something very wacky is going on with your player...

Heh, you're telling me.

Okay, in short, this morning I reloaded the drve tool to re-make the hard drive. It went thru it's thing, then I re-uploaded 2.00b11. Went and did a sync. .. 6 hours later, I come back, and to my plesant suprise, find that it did not reboot, or otherwise error. So, I THINK everything is good..

A few things worry me still, tho: I got that "You ain't see me roight" or wierd arse error again while the syncing was going on, and althought I'm not 100% sure, I think, while I was having it sit there playing music, it rebooted on me. When I was having the problems, I had sporadit reboots. (i.e. sitting at a prompt, it'd just reboot. While fsck was in stage 1, it'd reboot. The FIRST time I ran the drive maker tool, it would reboot while testing the drive.) Now, however, it looks fine - hasn't rebooted while I've been looking at it.

I'm crossing my fingers for the next coupla weeks.. Just in case.

Thanks for everyone's .. uh, help, paitence, and laughing at my expense!

Much happier, now..
Mike.

If the synchronizing logo stops moving, that's just the player "jiffies bug" (fixed in Hijack kernels). The sync usually still continues, and the logo usually starts moving again about 12 minutes later (or was that 19 minutes?).
